What Is a Gratitude Journal?

By Bhavya Linganna2 min read

A gratitude journal is a notebook where you write down the things you're thankful for. That's all it is. There's no special format and no right way to do it.

I didn't start with one. Growing up, I often felt there were things I couldn't say, and on the quiet days when my health kept me slow, I wrote instead. I didn't know it was journaling. I didn't know the word mindfulness either. I only knew that after writing I felt a little lighter. Gratitude came later, as one of the small habits I picked up along the way, and it has stayed with me longer than most.

What it looks like on the page

Mostly, it's very ordinary. A few lines at the end of the day:

I'm thankful for the tea I drank slowly this morning.

My friend called just to check in on me.

The sun came through the window while I was working.

That's a real entry. Nothing in it needs to be impressive. On hard days mine are even shorter, sometimes a single sentence, and that's fine.

One thing that helped me was getting specific. "My family" is lovely, but "the way everyone laughed at dinner tonight" is something you can feel again when you read it back. The smaller and more exact the moment, the more it stays with you.

Why it helped me

Our minds tend to hold on to what went wrong. When I sat down each evening to look for something good, I started noticing those things during the day, because I knew I'd want to write them down. Over time, my days didn't look different from the outside, but I was paying attention to different parts of them.

Studies on gratitude practices have linked them to better mood and well-being, but I can only speak for myself. For me it became a quiet pause I could count on, and I looked forward to it.

If you'd like to try it

Pick any notebook you like the look of. Choose a time you can keep, whether that's morning or night. Start with one thing, or three if you're feeling generous. You can be honest here. If the day was hard, you can write that you're thankful for a warm cup of tea and leave it at that.

If you miss a day, or a few weeks, just open the page again. The notebook doesn't keep score.

If you're not sure what to write, these questions might help:

What made me smile today?

Who am I glad to have in my life right now?

What went a little better than I expected?

What did my body let me do today?

Starting small

I still keep my own notebook, and some of the practices I picked up quietly in those early years are now the heart of Breathe Lightly. If you've been wondering whether a gratitude journal is for you, write one line tonight and see how it feels.

Continue the practice, gently.
